TMJ Treatment

TMJ is an abbreviation that stands for temporomandibular joint. Located just below the ear, this is the joint which connects the jaw to the rest of the skull. TMJ disorders, often referred to as simply “TMJ,” are localized pain disorders that can occur when the jaw joint is injured, misaligned, or damaged. Imbalances to the joint connecting the jaw and skull can be caused by any number of things such as grinding or clenching, trauma to the head and neck, unbalanced bite, ill-fitting dentures, and restorations. Whatever the cause, these joint imbalances can lead to pain in the head, jaw, neck, and ears as well as frequent headaches/migraines. Less common symptoms of a TMJ disorder include ringing in the ears or persistent nausea. If a TMJ disorder goes untreated, it can cause great amounts of pain and discomfort for the patient.
